Pre/Postnatal Nutrition

For many years it was believed that the poor quality of a pregnant woman’s diet would pose little threat to her unborn child.  The medical community was under the assumption that if the mother-to-be was deficient in certain vitamins and minerals, the unborn child would still receive these needed nutrients from the mother’s body itself.  For example, it was believed that if a mother was deficient in calcium, the unborn child would receive this much needed mineral from the mother’s bone stores.  Recent research has presented findings that strongly challenge these beliefs.  It is now believed that the same deficiencies found in the mother, with the possible exception of iron, will result in the same deficiencies in the child.

Despite the wealth of research highlighting the importance of maintaining a nutrient-rich diet throughout one’s pregnancy, it is reported that 40% of women between the ages of 20 to 34 have diets that are unhealthy.

Whether you are thinking of becoming pregnant, are currently pregnant, or have recently given birth, a program will be developed to suite your individual needs.

A program will consist of any or all of the following:

  • Safely increase fertility

  • Balance your diet to maximize maternal and fetal health

  • Careful monitoring of nutrient intake

  • Advice for vegetarians

  • Tips to minimize exposure to environmental pollutants

  • Alternative treatments for complications during pregnancy

  • Information pertaining to natural pain management

  • Methods for enhancing the success of breastfeeding

  • Postpartum weight loss
